Programming is not about learning a language. Programming is about learning a different way to think analytically. You can use a programming language for application while you learn programming but if you go into your studies looking to learn a programming language you are focusing on the wrong thing.

Being a proficient programmer means adaptability. It means being able to work with handicaps. I would suggest learning programming with an object-oriented language (like C++ or Java) as this will provide a decent basis for understanding other languages in the future.
