Websphere in both forms is very common on z/OS. Many customers have Java EE applications on z/OS using Websphere as the middleware.

For Devops we have initiatives in many of our middleware such as CICS and WAS which are all brought together with technology in Urbancode Deploy.

iBM Explorer linked here should be a good starting point. It runs on FTP and for jobs optionally z/OSMF.

Of course we are always working on improving our software. I spoke to one of the developers of RDz and they asked if you reported this to us? They believe that it is likely a setup issue.
