Thanks for advice, and no offense taken! I’m up in northern Cali near the Oregon border where the redwoods are, so not in any major city’s and this area is pretty good for not being too much of a crazy place and also good for growing things. My dad left California for the same reasons….politics because for his homesteading lifestyle there is way too much red tape in this state which I fully understand. It’s a hard place to live if you want to be an outdoorsman or be off the grid because of all the regulations here.

Husband and I are more into environmentalism and solar energy, home gardening and like to do our small bits to live a more peaceful and sustainable life. He’s from Japan where people live off seasonal fruit and vegetables, seasonal fish and lots of fermented and pickled things and seaweeds. We love to grow sweet potatoes and all kinds of other potatoes which I make stews and curry with, we live near the six rivers where there is a good supply of wild salmon to fish too. Right now I’m learning how to the jams and pickling, especially things like kimchi making and natto ( a kind of fermented soy bean). I’ll look into canning more things and those squashes you mentioned, my dad grows tons of zucchini and I love the stuff too!

Hi OP. My dad is a homesteader out in Montana. He hunts for meat, has an amazing vegetable and fruit garden and has a well on his property. He makes his living as an outdoor guide and spends most of his time fishing these days. Winters are harsh where he is, but he has a nice house on his property and chops enough firewood to last him the season.

What types of seasonal vegetables and fruit do you grow and how do you make it last over winter time? My husband and I are out in California and we currently have a big garden we eat from but we want to expand our options based on more seasonal delights. We had a great potato harvest this year and have added a lemon and lime tree to the mix, and our herb garden is pretty big. We don’t hunt but we do enjoy fishing, and I was considering raising some chickens for eggs.
