I was a plumber many years ago, and worked with Mexicans, and Cubans. One of my guys was a red headed, freckled face, Mexican. He spoke absolutely no English on purpose. He hated the idea of it. Anywho, the contractors thought he was white, and would have full conversations with him as he smiled, nodded, and laughed. This is in the south so a few times I heard them say beaner, and wetback referring to the Latino looking workers. Those were the words he knew, so he would throw his hands up cussing in Spanish as he walked away.

Welcome back. I bet it was emotional seeing your family realize you were actually in there. What was it like for you, and what was the first conversation like where they knew for a Fact you were in there?
