My understanding is that they will be filming the contestants as part of a reality show, and the reality show will be the source of a considerable amount of funding for the project. So, they are looking for funny/interesting people first, because nobody wants to watch a reality show with a bunch of ugly people and/or nerds talking about math. Sad but true.
