To my understanding there is an dangerous lack of R & D going into new antibiotics to combat microbial resistance to existing antibiotics. Is this due to the lack of potential profitability from a new antibiotic, or is it something else? While I understand that this may not be in your wheelhouse/the scope of the AMA, I think it's worth mentioning.

I wasn't saying that antibiotics were preventative medicine. They're quite the opposite. Sorry if I insinuated that. Could you elaborate on your comment about pharm. manufacturers spending "a ton on researching preventative medicine"?
Also, you're doing a great job! Thanks for taking time to do this.

Ok, so pharmaceutical companies also have (capitalistically speaking) little to no incentive to really push forward with this type of research? The more people that are inevitably afflicted with MRSA infections, the higher the demand will be for a new antibiotic to treat it. Once the problem becomes big enough, pharmaceutical companies will sweep in and make a killing. Preventative medicine/proactive R&D yields low profit margins.

A lot of questions are being asked concerning the legalization/medicalization of marijuana, but I'd like to know more about the pharmaceutical regulation of opioids. What is being done to treat mass addiction to readily available painkillers, and how can the problem be addressed at a policy level?
