Not true. People pass out after losing limbs and still live.

They probably told them to stay awake because they were panicking and figured going into shock was bad, or that if he closed his eyes then he would die instead of just passing out.

The body shuts down the non-important stuff when trama happens to another part of the body, in a lot of instances.

Source: knew someone who lost their arm, they were knocked unconscious right after losing the arm, and still lived.
