What's wrong with his wording? He didn't ask for examples. He just wanted to ask how OP wanted to be treated. This can go a long way to helping an able bodied person understand the mindset of those less fortunate in a physical sense, and could contribute to future interactions by getting a straight up opinion from someone in the know. Maybe they'll use that information down the road to reach out to someone in a situation without feeling concerned about the approach.
