As a journalist, what additional education and/or experience do you have to qualify you to report on factory safety?

What is the process for going from a PPL to flying in races? What certifications and rating do you pursue and how do you pursue them?

I don’t even like Elon Musk or the worship that surrounds him. As an engineer I’m just generally curious what journalists do to familiarize themselves with subjects before they report on them
