We always had a system for getting people to try beer: What do they normally drink for breakfast?

If they drink creamy coffee, then we went with milk, chocolate, or oatmeal stouts.

If they prefer black tea, then English brown ales (not really bitter, but more so than the creamy stouts).

If they like orange juice (or herbal/fruit teas) then lambics, hard cider, and German/Belgian wheat/white/weiss beers.

If they prefer water, try pilsners and lagers. Cold, crisp, and refreshing. You can go with the American big 3, or a local craft for an extra buck.

If they like black coffee, they already drink beer.

EDIT: Specified on teas

EDIT: 2 days later and this comment is still getting attention. I just want to point out that these are not the 10 commandments of beer, the only commandments of beer are the ones you sign up for. This is not to tell you what beer you should drink, but suggestions to get you started on the next steps of your beer exploration. This isn't to to find the best beer, but to find your favorite beer.

For IP... Well, none that China and the US would both agree to.

Good thing China is not a part of TPP.

Hey now, Redd's (while not good) is still grains (with apple flavor) and a top fermenting yeast. So unless you're a Reinheitsgebot, it is an ale.

If you do sign onto the purity laws, you can't call any of the American Lights beer because they use rice in their production to cut costs and decrease the heaviness.

Have you also noticed that people who have developed a taste for higher quality beers also have gained a taste for higher end coffee?

All the brewers (home and pro) and bartenders I know are just as big coffee snobs as they are beer snobs.
