Can your parents lip read? And when translating for them in person do you repeat what someone else is saying out loud, or just sign?

Just wondering because I have an aunt who is deaf, and when my uncle translates for her he speaks while he's signing. Often times she reads his lips while he gives his commentary instead of actually signing what he is saying. Just curious if this is common.
