How painful is it? And what were the requirements for being able to do this? Is it like an astronaut where you have to have very specific credentials?

My dream is to become a musician. I'm still pretty young (16), but could you give me some advice on how to get in the music business? I don't want to be huge successful like some mainstream artist, just successful enough to live comfortably. It would mean the world to me if you could give me some pointers.
