I've only been a farang tourist a few times but my impression is Thai people are a lot more fatalistic than Australia, for instance
Where we might have a Lookout point heavily fenced off and signposted for danger, the Thai will have a sign saying 'Danger, but if you want to see for yourself, don't blame us'

I'm 48 and could probably scrounge up $10k cash in an emergency... but then if I cash in my super and sell my house that ramps up to half a million. My ultimate plan is to end up buying a house in Thailand for $100k and living off savings

You're quite right - and the law will generally side with the status quo as well when it comes to custody, especially internationally.
I went through an 8 month divorce / property settlement / custody process and was told at the end of it that the children were in new schools now, with new friends and routines, so moving them back to the home they grew up in would be disruptive. You can't win

My office embarassment.
I was a Data Admin for a smallish company - 60 people at Head Office. The IT Manager resigns, and on the following monday morning, I transport all my stuff into that office, because hey, possession is 9/10 of the law.
Just as I'm settling in, and about to switch my laptop on - the guy walks back in! Management asked him to stay on a month to find a replacement.
I had to do a walk of shame back to my desk with all my stuff piled up on my chair
