During Prohibition, there were underground bars called "speakeasies" which served booze in violation of the law. They were called that because they were hidden and to get in, you had to give a password at the bar's hidden entrance quietly or "speaking easy."

In honor of those bars, there are "speakeasy" bars in NYC and other cities today which recreate the experience of drinking illegally with hidden entrances, passwords, jazz bands, 1920's decor, and vintage cocktails. They're legit bars with liquor licenses and everything, but it's a fun atmosphere.
