This is why you should always ask for the original filing and bill. If they cant produce it they have no claim.

I've never had to actually take a claim to court and obviously the higher the amount the harder they'll fight back but, I have threatened a few times and it usually ended with a "you'll be hearing from us in the following weeks" with various levels of effectiveness. The most successful being when an agency kept trying to collect a bill that hadn't been run through my insurance first and about 3 times they claimed they never got the info on it even after I told them each time. Eventually I told them to check the original bill and they said they failed to run it through insurance for so long that they had to eat the difference instead of me. Moral of the story, most people dont get paid enough to care so banking on laziness and poor organization works sometimes.
