Dunno if it was mentioned in the book, but since you mentioned liking “Her Kommer Vinteren” (Here comes the winter) I thought I would tell you that the song has been in a minor controversy in Norway.

You see the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation (government-owned radio and television public broadcasting company) which is often in charge of broadcasting the winter sports (which Norwegians love because we win at them) loved using that song in the trailers for the sports-season. But in 2011 they were forbidden by the late Joachim “Jokke” Nielsen's brother (who holds the rights) from ever using the song in that context again.

He said the song cannot become an anthem for “Norwegian narcissism” . About refusing the use of the song he said:

I hope it's a real downer for all the alpha-males and alpha-females in winter sports, these people I hate and loathe just as my brother did. The song is in no way for them, even if the Peanutbrain-association thinks so.

The big problem was that while they were using the song for sports and the celebration of Norwegian winning, the song (if you read the lyrics) is in fact a criticism of people who are always trying to impress.

Original first verse:

Er du av typen som aldri blir brun,

og som aldri heller prøver noe særlig på å bli det?

Er du ansett som en kjedelig kujon,

fordi du stort sett ikke gidder å bade?

Har du problemer, med å omgås overdrevent positive folk?

English (translated by me):

Are you the type who can't get a tan,

and who also never really tries to get one?

Are you thought to be a boring coward,

because you don't really like swimming? [Note: in Norway the water is cold also in the summer and Norwegians like to show off their badassness by jumping in even early in spring when it is freezing]

Do you dislike the company of overly positive people?

I just always find that fascinating, because all my life when ever I hear that song I think of all those athletes because of all those trailers. I never really listened to the lyrics until the brother spoke up. Personally I think he has a good point.
