I love it when people I think are awesome do an AMA and they end up proving that they're even more awesome than I thought.

That's what the people on Flight 93 did. I always think that's the absolute bravest thing. They were trying to save themselves, but they certainly were thinking of saving others as well.

But let's face it--you're not in the better off position because you're smarter our more capable or better. You're sitting pretty because you are lucky as fuck to be in the time and place that you are. That's what people tend to skip over when getting all superior our acting like people deserve what they get. You're not better. You're just fortunate.

People act like it says something good about them that they live in a place that has the infrastructure to deal with things like this instead of treating it like a "there but for the grace of god" situation and a reminder of how lucky they are.

Your story is heartbreaking, but I'm glad you get to be with your mom now. She sounds like an amazingly strong woman.
