I am a non-violent felon. How and when do I address this issue when applying for jobs?

I am in the US. Not enough time has transpired to get it expunged (I don't have the money to expunge it anyway) and in my experience most potential employers run the background check prior to offering the job. I appreciate any and all advise on this. I feel like a pariah - I just made some bad decisions!!

Where do the ideas come from and how do you decide what's going to get used and what's going to get shelved?
