My mental image is of a guy just sitting there pressing go forward, and pressing brake... is that pretty much it? And if so is it the most boring job in the world?

This is pretty vague... is that intentional? By that I mean, you haven’t really answered the question as to how you changed... perhaps you are the key to unlocking it all...

Yeah, that's why I used quotation marks. It really doesn't matter, especially as you've obviously changed your views and behaviour.
