I've had this debate numerous times with colleagues - ultimately it boils down to "The only good reason to keep cable/satellite is for live sports and some live events", but even that reason is fading fast as more sources of live content pop up online. Another argument I've heard is "I just want something I can turn on and zone out for a while" - that's great, and TV is excellent for this, but I can do the same thing online (youtube playlists, random live feeds, or just playing a random movie in the background).

I've heard cable subscriptions around the world dropped for the first time ever last year, and it's looking like this year they will continue to drop as companies provide more content online. There are some companies that refuse to realize where this is all heading. I wish HBO, for example, would remove the cable companies' collective dicks from their ass and allow us to pay for HBO GO without a goddamned cable subscription.

Bottom line: I've been without cable since college (several years) and I've never looked back. I regret nothing and I've saved a fair amount of money.
