Well, at certain points in history it most likely was far better off than during colonial rule. Europeans certainly have a few skeletons in their closet as well however. During the "dark ages" there were areas in Africa that were far better off than Europe and arguably more advanced. At one point in African history a Mali(iirc) leader traveled to Egypt and brought so much gold with him that it destabilized the Egyptian economy. I'm not saying it was a utopia but if you're going to deny that decades upon decades of colonial rule in Africa didn't fuck them up you're a god damn idiot.

Alton, your cheesecake recipe has gotten my girlfriend and so many compliments I just wanted to thank you! It's a giant success at family functions. One question if you would be so kind to answer, we follow your recipe exactly but I feel like the cheesecake never gets very firm in the middle. It is almost impossible to slice while keeping the shape of a slice. Is this just the nature of the recipe or are there any tips for helping it firm up a bit more?

Less than 10% of prisons in the US are privately owned "for profit" prisons. Just so you know. I absolutely agree that it can be a problem but they are not the root cause. Also, if you've ever talked to people who have been in prison in some cases the private institutions are seen as friendlier to the inmate and rather posh. As the other comment points out police officer and correctional officer unions are far more of a problem.
