Maybe stood my ground was not the best phrase to use. More, I didn't run away and trigger its prey drive. I have encountered a few grizzlies in the wild but this was the only scary one. I later learned from the park ranger that some wolves had killed an elk there and the bear was likely protecting what was left of the carcass. I also know I was just lucky, if it had been a predatory attack then things could of ended differently.
It's a good point though, acting strangely can be effective, I made myself look big, held my camera tripod in the air and probably cried a bit at him! They generally don't hunt though to be fair, other than opportunistic hunting.

Going back into Canada the border guards have been worse in my experiences.

That's terrifying! I was charged by a grizzly in the Canadian Rockies and your experience sounds even worse. I managed to scare off the bear by standing my ground. Stupidly my besr spray was attached to my pack and not accessible. Will never make that mistake again.
