My theory is that it's the families that are willing to travel to be on the show. I don't think they all can make it.

I toured Universal Studios when I was 14 and I remember them showing us the kitchen where they make the slim. It's all edible and I believe applesauce was one of the main ingredients. They said it has to be edibles otherwise people would throw up on tv because you inevitably get it in your mouth.
