Yes this mindset of screwing over your kids is disheartening. Kids take everything from you for very many years. Everything. They are very expensive, not to mention inherently selfish for decades. Most people are working to the bone and still get old with no safety net. I assume all these people complaining have rich parents.

I grew up hating history until I landed an amazing history professor. Then I ended up majoring in it and it shaped the rest of my life and uncovered skills I wasn't aware of. High school history is a travesty.

I don’t know that we know they’re narcissists and I see your point but after raising four kids I don’t begrudge parents needing some time off to themselves to do what they want to do for a chance . Also, unlike parents, kids are under no obligation to provide for parents. We don’t know these parents assume their kids will take care of them.
