I hesitate to seem overly critical of his filmmaking methods, as documentaries can come in all shapes and styles. Your article presents multiple moments where Esco dives deeper to get more material and enhance his story rather than disentangle himself from his subject. That doesn't strike me as the actions of someone who was truly concerned for his well being. How have your interactions with him struck you?
