This is definitely person specific. If I'm in a dark place, people being cheery towards me just makes me resentful and feel even worse.

IANATherapist, but I do have a bit of psych training (educator) and a lot of it comes down to the way you phrase and frame the question. A couple examples:

"Did he touch you?" Is a leading question. Typically most yes/no questions are leading to some extent. Instead, you're trained to ask things like "what happened?" That cannot be answered with a simple yes/no. It forces them to use actual details they have in their mind rather than letting the therapist/questioner dig for confirmation.

"No offense, but [proceeds to be offensive anyway]."

Yeah, that's not how that works, bud.
