One recent grammar evolution (for lack of a better term) is the common usage of “they/them” as singular.

While I recognize and accept the necessity of a singular non-gendered pronoun, and the utility of designating such a term as “they/them,” there are many people who make claims (usually without citations) that “they/them” has historically been used to refer to a singular pronoun consistently for hundreds of years.

Can you comment on the historical use of “they/them” as a singular pronoun, and whether or not it was in fact as common as some people have claimed?
