It's not that it's subjective, but that we don't have a separate word for a professional or qualified scientist, like, say 'doctor' or 'engineer', to distinguish these people from anyone who simply does science at some level, guided by the scientific method, and is also a scientist.

Instead we can say 'young scientist', 'amateur scientist', 'research scientist', 'theoretical scientist'...

To make an analogy, a Nobel prize laureate in literature can't tell you you're not a writer just because you only write poetry for fun.

With that said, I do understand the reluctance of young professionals to use the rather inaccurate and insufficient title of scientist their mentors have chosen. Edit: But maybe they should use the generic term 'scientist', while at the same time encouraging their superiors to pick something better.

TL;DR It's really only a problem of semantics.

Oh yes. I meant a bitcoin ATM on the moon or Mars, hehe. It would be terrible to get caught out there with useless paper money.
