What experience would you say was most valuable when you were first starting to produce your own content?

Wow, great answer! If I may, I've had a slow creeping realization over the past three years that I want to be a writer/director. What are some realistic projects that I should pursue to get closer to that dream while still, y'know, living under a roof and eating?
