I'll try to make this short and may be more of a statement than a question. I know stuff has to cost, but why does it cost SO much? Medicare is the most efficient system in the United States today (and the VA is very efficient as well) so why doesn't our government care about the well being of its citizens? Why isn't Medicare an option for any citizen? I think I know the answer and it is all about money, but I would like to hear you experienced take. Thanks

Yes I did mean it and it is born out in the statistics. VA out performs private hospitals in almost every metric. The spoiled veterans (and more often than not their family members who never served), of which I am one, have skewed the public perception of the VA. In such a massive organization will there be issues? Absolutely, but the organization as a whole is very, very good.

EDIT - And if ANY person had the choice to go to most any hospital or Mayo, of course they would go to Mayo, that comparison is absurd.
