What that person is referring to is what do they actually do for society. Most other professions provide something, they don't solely exist as a way to make money turn into more money.

Im on mobile and don't have access to scholarly articles so I can't give exact numbers. I know that <1% was the number that Purdue pharmaceutical cited would feel the addictive effects of oxycotin. A book I'm reading "Dopesick" states the number is much closer to 50%.
Anecdotally I know 6 people I went to high school (500 student school) with that got addicted through pain pills they were prescribed, 3 of them are now dead to heroin overdoses.

Not a dev, the eastern front of ww1 was a war of movement, not of stagnant trench warfare for the most part.
