I wonder if there are contractual obligations for keeping them? A loophole may be to place an obstruction in front of it. Remember that when you win :).

What gets me about them is that they are mainly about revenue. I don't think the point should be to break even or "make money" if they were truly for safety. I would rather see increased police presence than cameras. If an officer catches someone running the light they earned the ticket. If the goal is to increase safety irrespective of revenue countless studies point to increased yellow light times and even more so yellow light warnings.
