How hard was it to leave the big companies and start making indie games? Do you miss the AAA development stuff?

How do you get the people around you to actually read what you have written? I have written two novels, and two dozen shorter works (novellas, short stories, poems), and I haven't been able to get anyone, even my wife and friends, to read and give notes. Is there a way to find those alpha/beta readers?
