Your parents gave you something that no public education will, self-reliance.

Modern public schools in a social aspect are about subservience to rules and social norms.

Jesus this is depressing.

Not a bouncer but I've watched roadhouse a lot, and this always made sense to me.

"3 simple rules: One, never underestimate your opponent..expect the unexpected; Two, take it outside, never start anything inside the bar unless it's absolutely necessary; and Three...be nice."

Someone willing to learn a new language is one of the most encouraging and awesome things I've seen people do. I hope many of these people do find stability.
