If you've never taken medication for anxiety before, I'm a bit surprised they'd want to put you on Effexor right out of the gate. This is a serious drug with some serious side effects. There are similar drugs out there that are milder and gentler that usually get tried first. Maybe get a second opinion if you don't feel good about what your doctor is saying.
