My dad has this condition. He went completely bald in his early teens. He wont talk about it and everything I've have learned came mostly from my mom and grandma. He is completely without hair and is only comfortable without the wig around close family. My dad has had the same hairstyle for probably 30 years, and my mom jokes she will go grey the day he does.
The worst part for him is his constantly running nose as he has no nose hair to make boogers. I have had friends and girlfriends ask if he has cancer, and because of my dad's insecurities I feel almost terrible explaining to them the real cause. It doest help I'm one hairy dude with a beard and arm hair that would make Robin Williams proud. As I've gotten older and my hair on my head has started thinning my sister made a joke on me going bald and told her it would be a nice way to save by not going to the barber. My dad is always cold in winter. He never gets goosebumps . My mom had to teach me to shave which was weird. I was told it is an autoimmune disease, where the white blood cells attack the hair follicles. As far as i knew it isn't genetically passable to children much like asthma or allergies.
