Not the OP, but short answer: YES.

Long-ish answer: Unless you have extraordinary story telling ability and better than average writing ability, YES. Because even after you write your fantastic story, you have to convince an agent and publisher to take you on.

If you want to self-publish, you can do that easy as just make few clicks. If you want to be a successful self-published author, some may argue that your chances are slimmer than finding a publisher.

Especially if you are not writing erotica.
