A union almost certainly wouldn't stop someone incompetent from correctly losing their job

Looks at the police union So uh, about that...

I've seen enough incompetent and outdated workers who work in unionized jobs to know unions protect the incompetent. Maybe that's not their intention but that's the result.

USA is one of the worst places to work in developed countries and it shows with this lack of knowledge...

Where else in the world would I be able to earn $260k USD/yr in my mid-20s, as an immigrant coming from a nobody family and grew up bordering on poverty?

Say what you want about the US but there's a reason why there's a net flow of tech workers from all around the world to the US (yes, even from European countries).

Because police aren't labor. One of their functions is to prevent labor from organizing and becoming too powerful.

Wrong. Their job is to uphold the law. If organizing is against the law, blame the law, not the police.

Also most tech workers not making anywhere near a quarter-million per year in their mid-20s or ever.

Sure, and some will. My point is that I'm not going to support any tech union as they're not going to benefit me. In fact, they're going to stand in my way.

However if tech workers were unionized we would have more leverage to prevent our work from exploiting others or being otherwise misused in ways that are harmful to our society.

Nah, I'm good with what I do. I've fully embraced what it is that I do and what it takes for me to make my money.

And tech workers aren't labor either. What's your point?

How is a police union any different from any other worker's union? A teachers union is the same.

Tech workers aren't labor in the traditional sense that they are being exploited. If anything it is tech workers (such as myself) that are doing the exploiting. We're not making a quarter-million per year in our mid-20s without someone getting exploited in the process.

In every union I've seen, there are workers who would've long been fired if the union didn't exist. Unions also stand in the way of modernization that benefit the public, such as when automation along the Toronto Line 3 light rail was entirely possible but not implemented due to pushback from the union.

Every union I've seen focuses promotions, pay raises, etc. on seniority. This should not be the case. Promotions, pay raises and the such should be based on your skills and performance, seniority be damned. There should also be no job security if workers refuse to keep up with the times (look at how many older teachers don't even know how to use a projector or connect a monitor).

If you want to see a great example of just how wasteful unions are, look no further than what happened in Toronto.

Unions can be beneficial, but at some point, they become useless and wasteful, protecting the lazy and underperforming while stiffling those who are highly skilled.
